Hardware

  1. Nintendo DS – 2.5 million
  2. Nintendo Wii – 2.36 million
  3. Xbox 360 – 1.86 million
  4. PlayStation 3 – 1.21 million

Got these numbers from NeoGAF’s thread here. I wasn’t going to get into these monthly NPD reports, but it’s the end of the year, so why not?

The most surprising absence in the top 10 software list has to be Gran Turismo 5. That game came in eighth in November and failed to chart this month. You can’t say it’s due to lack of marketing because those Kevin Butler ads were everywhere for that game. Is it the lack of interest in simulation racers? Maybe. Forza Motorsport 3 came in eighth in its first month as well.

For me, the surprise appearances include Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit and Disney’s Epic Mickey. I didn’t think NFS would chart so highly.

As for the annual tally, I can’t believe Modern Warfare 2 came in eighth. A 2009 game beats out Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood. I wonder what the lifetime sales of that game is.

Speaking of lifetime sales, the Nintendo DS has surpassed the PlayStation 2 as the highest selling platform ever. Congratulations Nintendo. Also plenty of congratulations goes out to Microsoft who ended up being the only manufacturer to see a year of year sale increase in console sales for the month of December. Kinect and Xbox 360 S seems to be really paying off.
