I’m sending my original PlayStation 3 60GB with its PlayStation 2 backwards compatibility chips to the metaphorical bench and hired a brand new PlayStation 3 Slim to take its place.
The reasons behind this move are as follows:
- Past its prime
- Consumes too much power
- Currently enrolled with PlayStation Plus
My PS3 60GB still works, but I don’t know if it’s long for this world. The fan speeds have been kicking into high gear despite a relatively recent tear down and cleaning. So I chose to take preemptive measures.
Old fatty also sucks up power like there was no tomorrow. The power savings alone makes this worth it.
I also wanted to move my protected saves into the “Online Storage” and restore them onto my new PS3 before my PlayStation Plus freebie month expires. I believe the expiry date is August 4th
And finally, a $50 off coupon and a handful of BestBuy RewardZone gift certificates sealed the deal. $90 off? Why not? Unless the upcoming price cut is a deep one ($100), I’ll have no regrets with pulling the trigger.
Besides, the changes in the upcoming CECH-3000 revision of the PS3 aren’t too appealing, so it was either get one while I still could or settle for one of those. Funnily enough, that’s one of the reasons I decided to pick up my PlayStation 3 in early 2007 in the first place; fear of losing features.
Tomorrow I’ll detail the long winded data transfer process
