Update: Mac OS X 10.8.1 fixed the SMB browsing issues.
Upgrading to Mac OS X “Mountain Lion” hasn’t been all smiles and rainbows if you use Windows network shares. Ever since I upgraded, I wasn’t able to connect to my Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials network shares.
I used to be able to connect to my home server with “smb://192.168.1.115” and find all my network shares listed but with Mountain Lion, I was getting nothing but this error:
I searched but did not find the solution. What was wrong? Why couldn’t I connect to the server like I did in Lion and browse my network shares?
It turns out I couldn’t like that anymore. I had to actually specify my network share like so:
smb://192.168.1.115/documents
With that done, I wanted to solve the issue of unresponsiveness that I experienced with Lion. I deactivated “SMB signing” in order to improve SMB performance and it did. It may not be the most secure route but I’m not carrying top secret information here.
