So here you are.

You heard about all the accolades this adventure game received, and decided to take advantage of a Steam deal. After downloading all five episodes, you try to check out what all the fuss is about only to discover that the damn game doesn’t launch on your Windows 8 box. Well, here’s how you fix that.

Symptom

The Walking Dead does not launch on Windows 8.

and/or

The Walking Dead does not have controller support running under Windows 8.

The Fix

Download the “dinput8.dll” file and place it in the following folder:

<Steam directory>\steamapps\common\The Walking Dead\

And that’s it. The game should now launch with controller support.

  dinput8.dll (142.0 KiB, 12,043 hits)

For me my saves don’t seem to move on episode to episode.
For example, (SPOILERS) I saved Carly rather than Doug and in episode 2 on my save It says I’ve saved Doug. Will this work for that too?

Thats a coding issue. In that mission, whatever you do, the opposite happens. Its a Telltale Games’ code bug.

Hey guys. I tried every single one of the possible solutions that I found on the web. The only way I was finally able to fix the crashing issue, controller issue, and game not starting, was to copy the dinput8.dll from my Windows 8 64-bit system folder into the Walking Dead folder under steamapps common. I can’t remember if it was the DLL from the SYSWOW64 folder or the normal system32 folder, because I tried them both and don’t remember in which order. However, one of them did work and I was able to play with no further issues!

Hope this helps someone. It’s definitely a time-consuming headache trying to track down the problem! πŸ™‚

This fix also works for another Telltale game, The Wolf Among Us.
