I like Sony’s effort with this “Ultimate FAQ” of theirs. I knew most of the answers already but there were a number of revelations that we were not told before this lengthy post.
Will PS4 support media servers or DLNA support in order to stream videos or movies from a home PC?
The PS4 system does not support client functionality for media servers.
Will I be able to play background music while I play PS4 games?
Yes, the Music Unlimited streaming service will allow you to listen to music while you play PS4 games. A subscription to Music Unlimited is required.
I have a feeling that both of those are related. Sony wants their consumers to subscribe to their video and music services. Shuhei Yoshida did respond to people’s inquiries about DLNA and MP3 support though, hopefully this means Sony will add these functions in subsequent firmware updates.
The lack of DLNA support is a bummer because I actually do use the media streaming function on my consoles at times. The inability to load or stream MP3s is less of an issue for me at the moment because I only load my own MP3s for racers. The last time I loaded MP3s on my PlayStation 3 was for Wipeout HD and Gran Turismo 5. As long as Sony gets the MP3 situation sorted out before DriveClub, I’ll be content.
Unfortunately Sony didn’t answer the one question I had: Is the wireless antenna a 5 GHz capable one?
