Game of the Year 2014 Day 1 of 3

Game of the Year 2014 Day 1 of 3

I didn’t think I’d play enough good games to form a top 10 this year. Part of it was due to me being cheap and waiting for games to drop to the price point I was willing to pay. The other being the fact that I chose some less than stellar titles earlier this year. However, with a bit of luck, some sales and good decisions, I found ten titles that  worth listing.

But first some other awards!

The 2014 Game I Wish I Bought & Played in 2014

Winner: Wolfenstein: The New Order

Wolfenstein - The New Order Box Art

I saw it for $30 but decided to wait and it never fell in price. I’m a fan of Return to Castle Wolfenstein and a fan of many of the ex-Starbreeze members who founded MachineGames. Those guys made the excellent Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay. I heard nothing but positive impressions about it and if I weren’t such a cheap ass, it may have made it onto my top 10. But alas, it’ll have to settle for this consolation prize.

Checkpoint: Gaming with Vin Diesel Edition

The next 30 days or so will be chalk full of Vin Diesel. This guy has two games and a movie coming out.

  • The Wheelman game on March 24, 2009
  • Fast & Furious movie on April 3, 2009
  • The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena game on April 7, 2009

Mr. Diesel’s schedule must be full of promotional stunts these days. Right? I wouldn’t know. I do know how his games are shaping up on the PlayStation 3 though. In between Killzone 2 single player sessions, I took the time to try The Wheelman and the Dark Athena demos.

Here’s part two of my “Gaming with Vin Diesel Weekend”. This week’s PlayStation Store update brought two game demos starring Vin Diesel: Starbreeze Studios’ The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena and The Wheelman. This little preview is about the former.

Unlike with The Wheelman, I knew what I was getting into with The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena. I’ve actually played the original, Escape from Butcher Bay, when it was released on the PC. The original left quite an impression on me. It wasn’t just a gorgeous game, it was also an exceptional first person stealth action experience. Judging by the demo, Assault on Dark Athena, is also worth playing – just probably not on day one.
