QSF5’s GOTY 2010 Day 2 of 3

goty-2010Day two of three is here and I’m recognizing the surprises and disappointments of 2010.

For the curious, day three will be on Sunday.

Most Disappointing Game of 2010

Winner: Gran Turismo 5

Here were my expectations for the fifth Gran Turismo.

  • Highest caliber tech engine
  • Highest quality car models for all my favorite cars
  • Satisfying driving physics and engine

Just three simple requirements and Gran Turismo 5 managed to only meet one of them; the driving. The tech is all over the place ranging from jaw dropping to down right embarrassing. And the whole business with premium cars vs standard cars left many of my favorites looking like “high” resolution PlayStation 2 models.

Note that I didn’t even mention a quality game experience. I knew going in that Gran Turismo 5 wasn’t going to match up to Forza Motorsport 3 in that department.

Even though I’m still going to investing time in Gran Turismo 5, I can’t help, but feel let down by it. Hopefully future patches improve it tremendously.

Runners ups: Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, Call of Duty: Black Ops’ Multiplayer for PS3, Fallout: New Vegas

QSF5’s GOTY 2010 Day 1 of 3

goty-2010Yes, I’m doling out my own personal game of the year awards. If you don’t like it, too bad.

For the first day, I’m celebrating games I barely played or have yet to play.

The 2010 Game I Wish I Bought & Played in 2010

Self explanatory

Winner: Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit

The first Need for Speed game since Most Wanted that features cops and you’re wondering why I want this game? It was also developed by Criterion Games, you dolts! Plus, I enjoyed the demo. So why didn’t I get it yet? The fourth quarter is a crowded time and knowing that this is an Electronic Arts game, I knew it’ll most likely slide down the pricing ladder rather quickly. I’m also debating on which platform to get this game on. PC or PS3?

I just don’t know, but I want to pick it up and play it!

Runners up: Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, DarkSiders, Pacman: Championship Edition DX

The 2010 Game I Wish I Spent More Time With

I bought these 2010 games this year, but did not get a chance to invest enough time in.

Winner: Super Street Fighter IV

I adored Street Fighter IV and was looking forward to Super Street Fighter IV’s release. I even picked it up on day 1, but after a handful of rounds here and there, I left it sitting on the shelf. Maybe it was fighting game fatigue or appeal of fresh experiences, but I always look at it regretting that I didn’t put more time into it.

Runner up: Blur

GiantBomb’s Game of the Year 2010

posted in: Game News 0

giantbomb-logoReally, they’re the only publication that matters to me and they’ve left us with scores and scores of podcasts and videos to consume during the holiday break.

Video recaps for days one, two and three are up, but I’m all about their deliberation podcasts. Listening to debates over semantics is strangely entertaining and informative. A word of warning for those who haven’t played many of the top 2010 games; these dudes are not holding back on the story spoilers.

If you want to stay clear of spoilers and are simply looking for great 2010 games to play, check out their personal top 10 videos. So far we have Alex’s, Drew’s and Ryan’s.

All great stuff to keep me entertained for the rest of the week.

Thanks, guys!

Checkpoint: 2009 Game of the Year Edition

goty-2009It’s time to sit back and reflect at 2009’s wealth of games and highlight some of the most notable titles of the year. This year’s GOTY post was heavily influenced by GiantBomb’s own deliberations — these guys have the best GOTY awards in all of gaming media, in my opinion. However, you’re not here to read about GiantBomb’s awards, your here about mine and here they are.

Top Game from 2008

Winner: Persona 4

There are so many games which are released within a year — especially at year’s end — that there will undoubtedly be a number of titles which I will be playing later in the next year.

Persona 4 was the first title which came into mind when I thought of this category and it’s easily the winner. One the last great PlayStation 2 role playing games and one which I will remember fondly for years.

Runner-ups: Dead Space, Valkyria Chronicles, Yakuza 2
