Checkpoint: Wimbledon 2015 Edition

I consider Roger Federer the greatest of all time but he’s “over the hump”. He doesn’t have the consistency that we’re used to seeing and seems to spray his shots wide more these days. I don’t expect him to win majors anymore but I expect him to get into the quarters in most if not all the tournaments that he enters. And yet he’s surprising me with his second place ranking in the world and currently in the thick of it with Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final.

Novak is an unbreakable wall and yet somehow Roger managed to eke out a tie break from him. If this quality of play keeps up this could end up being one of the all time great matches of this tournament.

Thank goodness I was in the frame of mind to watch it. It’s been a restless few weeks.

I finished Batman: Arkham Knight. I liked it and I’m considering going back to mop up the remaining content to see what the Riddler has in store for me.

I finally checked out Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes. It’s easily the best playing Metal Gear Solid to date but hearing the voice of Kiefer Sutherland instead of David Hayter was weird. I didn’t spend the time to replay or explore as I usually do. I didn’t even play as stealthy. I wrapped up this “prologue” within an hour and came away optimistic for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain later this year.

Then I played The Stanley Parable for an hour or so. With that, I couldn’t help but replay it several times to soak up the different paths and endings. What a novel game!

GiantBomb 2014

It’s been a weird year for GiantBomb. Vinny, one of their talented video producers left for New York City to join Alex Navarro in New York City to form GBEast. The decision was motivated by family reasons but they’re making it work. I’m enjoying every piece of content from that two man crew.

GiantBomb filled the video producer role and Ryan Davis’ vacant spot with ex-Game Informer editors, Jason Oestreicher and Dan Ryckert. They (unsurprisingly) were excellent additions to the lineup.

At year’s end, Patrick Klepek, their news editor and horror game aficionado left at the end of this year for Kotaku.

Nothing lasts forever but despite the massive shuffling of the deck, I feel GiantBomb managed to maintain quality throughout the process.

Metal Gear Solid - Peace Walker Logo

LTTP or ‘late to the party’ pieces are opportunities for me to catch up and write about games I missed out on the first time around. They may contain spoilers.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of The Patriots was the last Hideo Kojima helmed game that I played. I played it once in 2008 and left it in 2008. I never revisited it because I felt MGS4 was a game that was meant to be experienced once. There was limited replayability because of the game’s heavy reliance on cutscenes. I enjoyed the wacky adventure for what it was and appreciated the fact that it was one of the last big budget games where the game’s director was allowed to go hog wild.

Checkpoint - Listless Gaming Edition

I’ve been quite listless when it comes to gaming lately. The future looks promising and I’ve poured quite a bit into upcoming games but it’s been a bit of a struggle to find something to grab hold of and lose myself to.

It’s a combination of my personal life issues and compelling television shows. My girlfriend and I are struggling to figure out whether we can stand each other’s differing opinions and philosophies in life. I’ve also found myself wanting to watch more television these days. From catching up with Archer, continuing The Wire and losing myself to excitement that is the World Cup.

You can’t fault me for not trying to find a compelling game though. I tried to get into The Last Remnant but the writing and voice acting was enough to deflate my enthusiasm for the title. I decided to throw in Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker from the MGS: HD Collection but I haven’t gone back to it after the slow start. I’ve also started Crashmo and Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask in an attempt to kickstart something.

Alas nothing has grabbed hold for more than three days thus far.

I’m not bored of gaming. Far from it. I continue to look forward to Destiny but this summer lull is hitting me pretty hard.
