The Last of Us Review

I placed The Last of Us on media blackout after its initial reveal. The pitch video was more than enough to convince me that I was going to pick up Naughty Dog’s final PlayStation 3 title.

Like Naughty Dog’s previous works, The Last of Us didn’t bring anything particularly new to the table; it was a compilation of great ideas packaged very well. I saw instances of Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, Left4Dead, Tomb Raider (2013) and Telltale’s The Walking Dead within it. The one thing I didn’t get a whiff of was Uncharted and that’s the mark of a successful departure for the studio.

Who are the Persona 4: Arena fans? Who are the people who are Persona 4 fans that were also fighting game fans? It was an unlikely crossover that I still cannot determine was a good idea or not.

I am a big Persona 4 fan. I’ve technically purchased Persona 4 twice now thanks to the PlayStation Vita release. I’m also a person who enjoys the single player side of fighting games. It turns out, I am the one of those consumers Atlus was targeting.

Capcom & Double Helix Announce Strider

strider-2014

It’s been a long time since we got a new Strider game. And in typical Capcom fashion, they’re bringing him back with the aid of a western studio, Double Helix.

I’m cautiously optimistic despite hearing that it is a 2.5-D side scrolling Metroidvania styled game. I’m hoping for the best but Double Helix’s track record doesn’t scream quality. Who knows? They could pull it (and Killer Instinct) off and become a top grade developer. We all have to start somewhere.

This trailer and gameplay demonstration are certainly solid beginnings:

Strider is expected to debut in early 2014 on the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC and Wii U.

Ultra Street Fighter IV Announced

Capcom announced another version of Street Fighter IV at Evolution 2013. I guess they wanted more people to play those characters found on the Street Fighter side of Street Fighter X Tekken. They will also be rebalancing the game based on fan feedback.

It will be made available in early 2014 on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It will come as a $14.99 downloadable add on or a $39.99 retail disc. I will be picking up the $9.99 Steam version.

I haven’t played Street Fighter IV in quite some time and every time I think about pulling the trigger, they release a new version and I end up waiting for it to arrive at a discounted rate. It’s a silly predicament for me to be in but just don’t feel the need to play it on day one.
