Checkpoint: Listless Summer 2015 Edition

posted in: Editorials & Features | 0

Two years in a row now where my summers turned into listless purgatory where the days seemingly go on forever and I feel like I’m wasting away.

And on that bombshell let’s move onto what I’ve been up to this week!

I Need Unlimited Bandwidth

All these betas, free PlayStation Plus titles, multi-gigabyte patches, Netflix, YouTube and GiantBomb videos busted my monthly 400GB allotment by 64GB. I have no idea how much that will cost me but I’m going to have to enable TekSavvy’s “Zap the Cap” option from now on. Dealing with monthly bandwidth caps is a terrible way to live.

Windows 10

I upgraded to Windows 10 on my desktop yesterday. Kicking off the upgrade process took a bit of elbow grease after I encountered the 80240020 error. I had to employ the following fix to force the update to download and install properly.

  1. Delete contents of C:\Windows\Software Distribution\Download
  2. Open RegEdit and navigate to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\OSUpgrade] Create a new DWORD (32-bit) Value with Name = “AllowOSUpgrade” and set the Value = 0x00000001
  3. Run wuauclt /updatenow

Eventually everything installed without a fuss. Then I tweaked some privacy and Windows Update distribution settings and I was off to the races.

The next big question mark is how Windows 10 will function with my WSUS server because at the moment, it’s not hooked into it whatsoever.

Contradicting Rockets & Nazi Zombies

I finished Contradiction: Spot the Liar on my iPad earlier last week. I wanted to write something about it but it completely slipped my mind. Maybe I’ll cobble something together for this Wednesday.

I’m making my Wolfenstein: The Old Blood and while I’m enjoying in spurts, I cannot play it more than an hour. I used to feel that way about Rocket League but the more I play, the longer subsequent sessions are. Now a couple of hours slips away as I’m playing through Ranked and Standard matches.

GiantBomb Content

Thank goodness for GiantBomb and its fans for providing me hours of content to consume. So much laughter.

TekSavvy Day #8

Finally. TekSavvy/Rogers activated my cable modem and I’m officially on TekSavvy’s cable internet service. So what happened? Why did Rogers need to send a tech to visit me? According to the tech, he was there just to 1) check my cable signal strength and 2) label the line as a third party line.

I don’t know why it takes so long to do that and why the folks at TekSavvy couldn’t tell me the reasoning behind the visit but it makes some sense. I’m just glad I can pack up Rogers’ cable modem and return it to them before they bill me for it.

With this ISP nonsense out of the way, I can get back to figuring out how I would like to set up my wiring cabinet for the house.

TekSavvy Day #5

Activation delays continued with Teksavvy as Rogers and/or TekSavvy lost the provisioning ticket. My Rogers internet service is still up and running, but I have no idea how long that will last as I did request to have it disconnected on the 14th of June.

TekSavvy’s tech support resent the ticket on Friday, but I was then left a a voicemail about scheduling an activation date.

What? Rogers shouldn’t need to visit me since I have an active line already. That’s usually the case, however it looks like Rogers will have to visit me. And as of right now there is a 3 day window for that visit.

Great.

Update: I also got another order confirmation e-mail from them. That’s three order confirmations for the same activation. I sincerely hope I’m not being charged for service that I’m unable to use.

Looks like I’m not on TekSavvy yet.

teksavvyI tried to connect my cable modem but it says it still needs to be provisioned by Rogers. And my Rogers still works so I guess they haven’t moved me over yet? They did say the installation day was June 14, 2012; maybe they’re going to take the entire day?

I’ll update as the night progresses.

I’m not a fan of this ambiguity.
