The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct trailer (PS3, 360, PC)

That Activision published Walking Dead game doesn’t interest me one bit. It’s based on the AMC show which I have no affinity for and it it looks like nothing more than a cash grab.

Rayman Legends coming to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 along side the already announced Wii U version. I guess I should be excited for it but I still haven’t played Origins. I might start that next.

As for news of a new Assassin’s Creed: don’t care. I care enough to mention how much I don’t care about it though.

Game of the Year 2012 Day 2 of 3

Day two brings the pleasant and unpleasant surprises of 2012.

Also forget finding a runner-ups, I had a difficult time finding a winner for the “Most Disappointing Game of 2012” because of the pre-screening I conducted before committing any resources on a game this year.

On the other hand, there were plenty of surprises to name. I kept it to three but as you will see tomorrow, I found many great experiences from some unlikely games.

Most Disappointing Game of 2012

Winner: Final Fantasy XIII-2

I enjoyed Final Fantasy XIII. I was looking forward to this release because I actually liked the universe Square Enix fabricated. I also heard some utterances of this game being better than the original which probably raised my hopes up a bit too much. In the end technical issues, grinding and unlikable characters soured the experience for me.

Runner-ups: N/A

LTTP or ‘late to the party’ pieces are opportunities for me to catch up and write about games I missed out on the first time around. They may contain spoilers.

I finally picked up Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead after hearing that the GiantBomb crew were going to spoil it in their game of the year deliberation podcasts. And since I didn’t want it spoiled for me, I decided to play it for myself. It was less than $13 at Amazon.com.

I encountered a stumbling block right out of the gate: the game would not start. I discovered there’s an incompatibility between The Walking Dead and Windows 8. I found the fix and it was relatively smooth sailing from then on. The only other technical issue was the minor stuttering that I witnessed after the initial loading of an episode.

So here you are.

You heard about all the accolades this adventure game received, and decided to take advantage of a Steam deal. After downloading all five episodes, you try to check out what all the fuss is about only to discover that the damn game doesn’t launch on your Windows 8 box. Well, here’s how you fix that.

Symptom

The Walking Dead does not launch on Windows 8.

and/or

The Walking Dead does not have controller support running under Windows 8.

The Fix

Download the “dinput8.dll” file and place it in the following folder:

<Steam directory>\steamapps\common\The Walking Dead\

And that’s it. The game should now launch with controller support.
