According to Steam I’ve already invested 43 hours into Sid Meier’s Civilization V. I don’t think I’ll be writing a “review” of this, so I’ll be using these Checkpoints to chime in on my thoughts on the game.
I’m currently infatuated with the notion of finishing a game with the select criteria:
- Leader: Ghandi
- Win condition: Cultural Victory
- Map size: Large map
- Difficulty: Prince (4)
- Using only one city
It’s a tough challenge and even though I failed 3+ times, I keep going after it. I think I should abandon the One City Challenge and go after beating the game with 3 cities or less since I think it’s a fruitless endeavor at the moment.
But I did learn a lot about micromanaging citizens, examining terrain and maximizing it for combat bonuses. I’ve also witnessed a much more aggressive A.I with just one city. I’m not sure if it’s the fact that I’m playing on Prince difficulty or the fact that I’m just lone city with a paltry army, but they attack with a sizable force. Even the relatively weak A.I can win with numbers.
One thing I haven’t been able to figure out is how to keep civilizations happy. With Civilization IV, it was easy. I look at the relationships chart and see who hates who and then accommodate. With Civilization V, it’s a crapshoot. There isn’t even a “Hey what do you think of this person” option during discussions.
According to TechSpot’s look at Civilization V’s CPU utilization, the game hovers around 50% with four cores. I wish it used more than that. Civilization games always chug in-between turns during the late game, but I was hoping the mult-core support would alleviate a bit of that. Using only 50% of each core is a bit disappointing. I was hoping it taxed those cores more — like how it does with a dual core setup. Perhaps a patch will address this? Is it even possible to do so?
I just want to get to the next turn faster.
