Checkpoint: Battlefield 3 Beta Edition

Is it really a beta or a glorified demo? It’s a beta. Or at least, that’s what I hope it is because the Battlefield 3 open beta is anything but a quality representation of the final product.

Bugs, Glitches & Crashes

Graphical glitches were rampant with random screen flashes, clipping and some of the scariest animation snafus that I’ve seen in a long time.

I can ignore these issues if it didn’t affect gameplay, but unfortunately they did. Falling through the world happened far too often and being killed by seemingly “dead” soldiers can annoy the weak of heart.

Wrong Map. Wrong Mode. Wrong Settings.

The worst offense has to be what DICE chose for their open beta. They may have explained why they chose Operation Metro and Rush, but not everyone is in the know.

This isn’t the Battlefield that they want to sell is it? Infantry only? In a relatively small and confined map?

Runs & Responds Well

On the plus side — a big plus, in my opinion — the game runs well. There are slowdowns in certain spots, but I’m pleased with how the game performs.

It also responds surprisingly well compared to Bad Company 2. With a small adjustment in sensitivity, I found the controls to be one of the best and most responsive this side of the 60 FPS barrier.

Lots of Weapons & Unlocks

I love the fact that there are lots of weapons and accessories to accompany them. I am less than thrilled about unlocking class specific gadgets. It’s similar to Bad Company 2 where I have to unlock defibrillator pads, so it’s not that surprising.

Thanks Medal of Honor

DICE added more of the heft and impact found in Mirror’s Edge and married it to what they started in Medal of Honor’s multiplayer mode.

So Far So Good

It may not be a flawless experience or even the right experience, but I am pleased with what I’ve played. If the final version fixes the issues of the beta and brings the Battlefield experience we’ve come to expect out of DICE, we’re in for a quite a treat.

Finished the Gears of War 3 campaign with my brother. It could be described as the best Gears of War campaign to date, but that could also mean it’s just another Gears of War game. I should have a review up by Wednesday.
