GameDealsCanada’s Deal of the Year 2011

deal-of-the-year-2011-logo2011 was a pretty good year for Canadian game deals. Paying $40 for nearly any new release coming out in 2011 and late 2012 was a reality. It was also a year with console hardware price cuts with surprisingly good results for the retro gamer.

So without further delay, here are this year’s winners.

Digital Distribution Deal of the Year

Winner: Batman: Arkham City for $19.99 (40% off) on Origin

Yes, it’s not a Steam deal — it’s not even a Steamworks title. But having Batman: Arkham for $19.99 just three weeks after its release cannot be ignored. I have to commend Origin for storming in this year and trying its darnedest to attract customers with these kinds of aggressive deals.

Oh and GreenManGaming isn’t too shabby either. Competition is great!

Runner ups: Batman: Arkham City for $17.25 (66% off) on GreenManGaming, Saint’s Row: The Third for $19.99 ($40 off) on GreenManGaming

Gaming Hardware Deal of the Year (Retail)

Winner: Nintendo 3DS for $169.99 ($80 off) & get 20 free games from Nintendo

On July 28, 2011, Nintendo announces that they’re slicing their 3D handheld’s price down to $169.99 which is a hefty price cut regardless of the timing. They also try to make amends with the early adopters by offering 20 free quality Nintendo classics to anyone who purchased a Nintendo 3DS before August 11, 2011 11:59 PM EST.

With that scenario, folks were able to go out and buy Nintendo 3DS consoles at BestBuy/FutureShop and use their respective price protection policies to get the best of both worlds: the $80 price cut and 20 free games. You could have also headed out to Costco which dropped their price early.

If these weren’t quality exclusive downloadable games, it wouldn’t have won. But because Nintendo’s offers were so tempting, I think it deserves the win this year.

Runner upsPS3 320GB console w/ Uncharted 1&2, Ico/SotC HD & inFamous 2 is $299.99 @ BestBuy, Xbox 360 4GB console is $129.99 ($70 off) during Boxing Day

Software Deal of the Year (Retail)

Winner: Pre-order 3 E3 Titles & get $20 off each title @ FutureShop

Getting new releases for the remainder of the year and into 2012 for $39.99 or less? Yes, please. Virtually no limit on the amount of pre-orders and plenty of time to pre-order, this is easily the best deal of the year.

Battlefield 3, Uncharted 3 & Skyrim for $45.19 each on day one is hard beat. As for my 2012 lineup? I’ll be getting BioShock Infinite (PC) for $33.18 after taxes. Too good.

Runner up: Assassin’s Creed: Revelations (PS3, 360) for $19.99 ($40 off) @ GameStop, Saint’s Row: The Third (PS3, 360) for $29.99 ($30 off) @ GameStop & Batman: Arkham City (PS3, 360) for $29.99 ($30 off) @ Walmart

Not Too Shabby

I know folks out there were disappointed by Boxing Day/Week’s lack of stellar sales, but looking back at the year as a whole? It wasn’t too bad.

Here’s to hoping 2012 will fare even better. Hell, if FutureShop repeats their E3 promotion for this year, I’ll be more than happy.

I think the Deus Ex: Human Revolution one for under $17 on Steam recently (TWICE) was an insane deal! That was one of the games this year that I bought day one though haha. One of my pics for GOTY too!
