Hideo Kojima, Guillermo del Toro and Norman Reedus are bringing us Silent Hills and they decided to generate a bit of hype for Kojima’s project by releasing the PlayStation 4 playable teaser known only as P.T.

By the time I got around to it, the cat was out of the bag. People already discovered P.T was actually a teaser for Silent Hills. According to Kojima, this teaser was supposed to be cryptic and take the community at large a week or so to decrypt — unfortunately it took less than a day.

I wanted a taste of what Silent Hills may offer and decided it was worth trying anyways. And you know what? It was spooky! I actually screamed and felt chills as I was looping down the hallways.

The jump scares got me and the disturbing imagery were properly unsettling but the sound design was the star of the show. They used the 5.1 surround sound effectively by engulfing me with unnerving ambience and static spewing ghouls. I was checking behind me on a regular basis.

I didn’t complete the teaser but not for the lack of trying. I didn’t know where I had to stare intently to progress onto the next loop so after 10 minutes wandering around aimlessly, I turned it off. If the final game ends up being just as unsettling and less cryptic, I can see Silent Hills being a very special experience for survival horror fans.
